The Emu bird (Dromaius novaehollandiae) is native to the Australian continent. The aboriginal population has used Emu oil, Emu meat and Emu leather throughout their history, and when European settlers began to arrive to Australia they also realized what a useful bird this was. Commercial farming of Emu birds and large scale production of Australian Emu oil are however fairly new things; the first Emu farm was created in 1987 and the first slaughter of a commercially farmed Emu bird took place in 1990. What is the difference between Australian Emu oil and North American Emu oil?

As of today, no scientific study has been able to prove any characteristic differences between Australian Emu oil and North American Emu oil. The differences can actually be greater between different farmers within the same country than between two farmers from different parts of the world who care for their birds in a similar way and provide their livestock with the same type of food. The University of Massachusetts has for instance carried out a study where the anti-inflammatory properties of crude Australian Emu oil was compared to crude United States Emu oil and no divergence were found. The American Emu Association has compared crude Emu oil samples from nine different countries, including Australian Emu oil, New Zealand Emu oil, United States Emu oil and Canadian Emu oil, without finding any geographically based differences. (Since the study was carried out by the American Emu Association, it is naturally possible to question the nonaligned status of the study since the organization has to protect its own interests.)
